As much as that was supposed to be for humorous purposes, I received an email this afternoon from a nice  person who just got scammed from the same scammer.  It was supposed to be for her eleven year old son.  Apple, it really would be nice of you to send them a laptop.

Top IT Tool of the Week… Episode 3

June 30th, 2008 by Jason Lowmiller
Monster Lo-Carb

Ok, so this weeks tool tip is a little late. I apologize, my friends lovingly kidnapped me and forced me to go fishing over the weekend. And for that I thank them because I really enjoyed it. So, without further delay here is Jason’s Top IT Tool of the Week, Epsisode 3.

This weeks tool tip may seem a little odd, but if your in IT or have some level of responsibility for maintaining the uptime for anything, you’ll understand the necessity for this tool. I’ve tried many energy drinks in my day. From Red Bull, to Rock Star, and beyond to some of the most obscure and quite frankly disgusting drinks that I’ve ever had, none of them delivered the full effect that I was going for except this drink.

Now I realize that there exists beverages that could be used to power some of the smaller third world countries for what would could total two weeks. Monster is not like these. Monster combines a wonderful blend of B-Vitamins (6 and 12), Caffeine, nutrients and herbs like Taurine, L-Carnitine and Ginseng into one extremely tasty beverage that delivers when you need it most.

There have been many a late night were this beverage has saved both my and my end users sanity of having to deal with cantankerous issues. I love this product so much I’ve named at least one of my personal servers after it. But as tasty as this beverage may be, I do not condone the use of it lightly. Read the warnings and watch your consumption. If you are really sensitive to caffeine, or cracked out in general, this product may not be for you. Also remember, the more you consume something the more your body builds up tolerance and the product may grow less effective. Solution? More Monster!

Here’s to you, Monster Beverage Company, for saving my butt on more than one occasion.

OMGOMGOMGOMG! MacBook Pro only $650.

June 25th, 2008 by Jason Lowmiller

LOL.. so today, I was perusing Craigslist, as I often do, to find any good deals on server equipment, racks, and so forth in our local area. I ran across a listing telling about a MacBook pro for $650. I emailed, for kicks, to find out the specific details and got a return email from someone named amythedreamer79@hotmail.com. Well turns out this scam artist is quite evolved and patient. If anyone wants to look at the email click here. Not suprised it was a scam, I guess I’ll just have to wait a little longer to be able to get that shiny new Mac.

So, just to be a jerk to some scammers, I sent an email back to them saying that I didn’t want to pay $650 dollars, that I had found a MacBook Air stripped down for $500. So of course, they were like, ya we could sell it to you for that. Here is the follow up email.

Ok, so until I got that unfortunate email today from a victim of this scam, I didn’t really choose to look at the headers very much.  For those of you interested, it appears that this person is using AOL to do his or her dirty work.  The funny thing is, they are using an open SMTP relay on a server to send out the initial messages, but since the reply-to address is a Hotmail account they are simply replying to messages sent to them from Hotmail’s interface.  This is why the header information looks slightly different between the two messages.  The company with the open relay has been contacted, but due to security I am refraining from mentioning the server (although finding which one it is, is fairly simple to do).
